Why remodel? One of the biggest reasons is an expanding family. Consider a couple who buys a house they expect to be suitable for them and the family they are planning. At first, with just the two of them and minimal furniture, the house seems big. But as the years go by and they add a second baby girl and a couple of dogs, space becomes a little tight. There’s nary a room sans pink plastic Barbie furniture when they discover they’re expecting again — this time a boy. Now they know something’s gotta give.
This couple has several options. While finishing the basement doesn’t really make more space for cribs and changing tables, it opens up a comparatively vast storage area for the mounting toys and provides an area to throw balls safely and ride tricycles in the winter. Plus, it’s a great place to send the kids on a rainy day so you can get a moment’s peace and a cup of coffee. But depending on the style of home you own and the number of rooms in it, this might not work for you.
Your boys and girls will need separate bedrooms, and if they’re too little to sleep in the basement, you’re going to have to look at expanding. This can be done many different ways, depending on your budget. Restructuring the layout of your home might be the solution for you. If you have boxy rooms that are all the wrong sizes, or rooms you don’t even use, like a formal dining room, you might be able to move some walls around and steal some extra space that way.
Turning a dining room into a bedroom and adding onto the kitchen with a bump-out eating area is an easy way to gain space. If staying inside the boundaries of your current home’s structure simply won’t work and you have a home with a porch or a patio, this could serve as the footprint for your new room. A plan like this can save money, as the bare-bones structure is already in place.
If this isn’t an option for you, you might consider knocking out a back or side wall to add on your extra room. If your home is two stories and it’s doable, adding two rooms — one on top of the other — gives you twice as much space. When you’re in the planning stages, it’s best to talk with a trusted professional who can help guide you through the process and help you make the right decisions.
