It’s fun to log on and look at remodeling trends to get ideas for changes you’d like to make in your home, but you would be wise to make choices that will last versus ones that will make a big impact but quickly look out of date.
What are some seriously trendy remodeling ideas you may want to think twice about before investing in? Let’s take a look at a few.
1. Built-in coffee stations
Some of these behemoths take up more space than a refrigerator. Seriously, do you need that much room to make a cup of coffee? Maybe the percolator your mom used to have won’t do the job for you today, but a couple of appliances and a few cups should do the job. If you’re really a coffee aficionado, at least consider building a station that can repurposed as something else, in case you decide to sell your home or your doctor tells you to cut back on caffeine.
2. Designer stove hoods
You know these are for sucking grease and odors out of your kitchen, right? Having it double as a piece of art is like buying a horsehair toilet brush. That doesn’t mean you have to settle for the most common stainless-steel one at your local big box retailer, but ones shaped like flowers or electrical sockets may not have the lasting impact you want. And beware of the wooden ones — plenty of stores sell them, but they’re hard to clean without scratching.
3. Unusual colors
Have you seen red appliances? Take a look. Sure, they look great, but for how long? You will likely soon tire of your fire-engine-colored refrigerator and blood-red stove. Your home is not Pottery Barn Kids. If you want splashes of intense color, use paint — it’s much cheaper to switch out than appliances or flooring. Or at least choose small appliances, like toasters and coffee makers.
4. Wine refrigerators
Sometimes it seems like wine snobs are taking over the country, but plenty of people still like beer and iced tea. If you want to collect and display wines, get a wine rack, it’s portable. You can keep a bottle or two in the fridge in case company comes over unexpectedly instead of investing in a built-in refrigerator dedicated solely to wine. It takes up premium kitchen space, and the next owner of your home might give more weight to gadget or food storage than vino hoarding.
