What’s Your Style for a Kitchen Remodel?

June 17, 2016

If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, you should start by carefully evaluating the various styles of kitchen design.

Of course your choices are going to be somewhat limited based on the style of the rest of your home. If your home is decorated to invoke rustic cottage charm, then subway tile and stainless steel in the kitchen is going to come across as slightly incongruous.

If it’s just your furnishings that are rustic and you are looking for a change, this is your big chance. But if you have barn board on the walls and exposed beams in the ceiling, you’re going to have to work with these when you do a kitchen remodel, absent a major renovation.

See how some of the most popular kitchen designs match up against your tastes.

Modern/Contemporary

A modern kitchen style is achieved by choosing a sleek and sophisticated design with minimal decoration (clutter). No whimsical refrigerator magnets to hold up the kids’ artwork, no herbs on the windowsill, no crock of tools. This kitchen has to look almost sterile, like you would expect a kitchen on a spaceship to look.

Contemporary is similar — you want everything new and sleek — but you get to add a touch of personality here. A vase of flowers. A tchotchke — just one! You also may be able to get away with using some color, or at least something that isn’t gray.

Country Cottage

When homeowners do a kitchen remodel, many opt for a quaint, old-time feel. It tricks them into thinking they’re living in the French countryside instead of Salt Lake City. This style is almost universally white, so plan either to spend a lot of extra time cleaning or hire someone else to do it for you.

A country style is usually heavy on the wood, and often employs some glass in the cabinet fronts, or no doors at all. Heavy crown molding is practically a must, and if you can work in a painting with a rooster in it, you will have hit the nail on the head.

Traditional

If you think your style might change or evolve over the years, traditional is the way to go. You can pick out what you like, but you aren’t married to one look, which is good, because after you spend money on a kitchen remodel, you don’t want to do it again for a while.

The truth is, you can do pretty much whatever you want in your kitchen and claim you are employing a “traditional” décor. Various prestigious design sites describe this style as formal, elegant, cozy, warm, homey, country, eclectic, rustic, Old World and high tech!
