A kitchen remodel is a fun and exciting undertaking, and with the proper preparation, you can make sure your project goes smoothly and according to plan.
You want your kitchen remodeled because you don’t like the way it looks now, but do you know how you want it to look when it’s done? Many homeowners aren’t sure, and even those who are frequently change their minds as they get more information.
It’s a good idea to follow some tried-and-true methods when you’re ready to begin your kitchen remodel so you can avoid any mishaps or delays.
How Does Your Kitchen Look?
Your first step will be creating drawings of how your kitchen is now. Not everyone uses an architect, but whoever does the drawings must accurately depict the location of windows, doors, walls, outlets, wiring, plumbing and gas lines. These are the basics that are necessary for planning and for safety.
Once we have the pictures in hand of what your kitchen looks like currently, we can set about changing it. Will you want to move windows, doors or walls? If so, your project estimate is going to come in higher than if you didn’t make any structural changes.
If you have never been able to open your kitchen door fully because it bangs against the counter, or if your window is oddly placed and looks out on nothing, this is the time to make changes. But if you merely want to shift these elements a few feet in one direction or another, you may be better off using a different path to achieve the look you want.
Ditto with utilities and appliances. A kitchen should have a work triangle set up — sink, refrigerator, stove — so the cook can move easily from one appliance to another. If yours have always been in a line or too far apart, a perfect time to remedy this mistake is during your kitchen remodel. But if you just want to put your gas stove where your fridge is and your sink on another wall, moving the plumbing and gas lines will inflate the bottom line.
Kitchen Remodel Dreams
When you get the structural matters out of the way, it’s time to provide us with a detailed list of what you have in mind for your dream kitchen. Do you want an island? Let’s see if there’s room.
Will you want all new custom cabinets and granite countertops? We agree, these would be nice, but if the cost starts creeping up too high, we can show you some substitutions that might work just as well for you.
All kitchens need appliances, cabinets, countertops and floors, but the next question is what kind? What’s your style? You can say modern-contemporary-shabby chic, but it’s a good idea to keep a file of pictures of kitchens you like. That will give us the best idea of what you’re looking for.
