Should you tackle home remodeling before the holidays?
On the one hand, you hate to think of the mess and the noise just when you want your house to be clean and quiet. But on the other hand, you know that guests will drop by, and some will even stay overnight, and you’re tired of being ashamed of how your home looks.
It’s also the time of year when your budget might be stretched a little thin, due to holiday shopping. But honestly, is there a time of year you’re reliably flush with cash? Maybe after you get your tax refund. But you can’t wait that long!
How to Prioritize When Doing Home Remodeling
When deciding on a home remodeling job in preparation for guests, you want to ask yourself what needs to be done the most. It’s probably the kitchen or the bathroom, since these rooms have so critical features. Your other rooms are mostly empty rectangles until you fill them with your possessions, which can be easily switched out when you tire of them, so those are easy to deal with on your own.
You likely only have so much to spend, so you’ll need to prioritize.
Do Your Bathrooms Work?
The most important question to ask yourself is, does it function? Can you use both the upstairs and the downstairs shower, or has one of them been out of order for a long time? What about the toilets? Do they all work?
If the answer to any of these is no, start your home remodeling project in the bathrooms. A home absolutely needs functioning bathrooms. If you’re having company and just one is working, you could run into real trouble.
It’s critical that your sinks, showers and toilets work in every bathroom. Sometimes you only need a repair, but other times a repair is just throwing good money after bad. If your fixtures are old, discolored or chipped, if your pipes have narrowed so much over the years you have to use drain cleaner on a weekly basis, it’s time to rip out the old and install the new.
Home Remodeling Often Starts in the Kitchen
The same principles apply for a remodel in your kitchen. You need working appliances — a stove and refrigerator at the very least. If your dishwasher is broken, you might not think it’s important to replace it right away. But you’re wasting water washing dishes by hand, and you end up with a kitchen full of dishes all the time, whether they’re clean or dirty.
If your floor is worn out, your cabinet doors can’t be reattached even one more time or you have Formica on your countertops, home remodeling is in order.
