A Remodel Will Bring Your Bathroom into the 21st Century

January 20, 2017

You can see some really crazy bathroom remodeling ideas and pictures online.

Some depict expansive bathrooms with more cabinetry than you have in your kitchen, and upholstered chairs! Who just sits around in the bathroom?!

You want to be trendy too, but you have to be practical. Bathrooms are for getting clean, and well, going to the bathroom.

So what should you incorporate in a bathroom remodel for the new year that looks great but also makes sense?

  1. Glass. Bathroom remodels in 2017 will feature clear glass shower surrounds. No metal tracks, no frames, no frosted glass. Just clarity.

One minus is that soap scum and minerals build up on all this glass, giving it a frosted look, temporarily. A plus is that today’s shower surrounds aren’t filled with the innumerable cracks and crevices of yesteryear’s shower doors, which provided the perfect living conditions for mold and mildew spores.

You may have to clean these doors more often, but their minimalist structure will make the job easy.

  2. Nothing beige. That’s right, all those earth-tone colors — caramel and taupe and sand and baguette — they’re out.

    What’s in?

White, of course. White is always in. But also gray, and even green and blue. The blue that’s popular is a sort of mosaic of water-colored shades. And green. A real Kermity green, too! Let the outdoors be your inspiration for your bathroom remodel.

  3. Mirrors that aren’t rectangles. That’s right, round bathroom mirrors are it. Your face is round, why should your mirror be a different shape?

Round isn’t your only option though — you can find a host of fun shapes at Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel.

You might be tempted by the pictures of wood cabinets and floors you see online, but remember, you have to be careful with wood in the bathroom — wood and water don’t mix. If you have little kids who splash water out of the tub, or teenagers who leave heaps of wet towels on the floor, stay with tile for your bathroom remodel.

Also, if you have the space (and a window), consider putting a live plant in the bathroom. The moisture and humidity are perfect for many species of plants. Hang a nice fern or a philodendron from the ceiling, or install a shelf up high and put it there to save space.
