A Basement Remodel Is the Answer to Your Space Woes

March 23, 2017

A basement remodel can add a significant amount of living space to your home, depending on your house’s style.

Colonials usually offer less space than ranches or ramblers, because of their boxy nature, with living space stacked up rather than spread out. A Cape Cod with a large footprint may offer more with a basement remodel than a cottage or craftsman home. And split-levels have so much living space that the basement area usually has little room for much more than the laundry machines and HVAC units.

So when planning a basement remodel, it’s important to consider how much space you have to work with, and what you hope to use it for.

Basement Remodel Ideas

Some popular uses include:

  1. Spare bedroom(s)

  2. Recreation room

  3. Home theater

  4. Playroom

  5. Workshop

  6. Home gym

  7. Separate apartment

  8. Bar/entertainment area

  9. Office

Some homeowners have enough space to employ two or more of these uses. But local laws may prohibit some uses. For instance, if you don’t have a separate exit in your basement and your windows are not close enough to the floor to meet code, you may not be able to use it for a sleeping area. These laws may also prevent you from renting it out as an apartment or spare bedroom.

Close to Utilities

Since most people’s HVAC, plumbing and electricity are already in their basements, adding living space, bathrooms, wet bars or high-tech equipment will not be as expensive as it would be to add it in a garage, attic or addition. (Just make sure your space is dry!)

Large spaces with good lighting that may come from sliding glass doors or big windows are great for offices, recreation rooms or playrooms. Natural light is a mood booster, and helps make work (or play) more productive. Having easy access to the outside is also good for kids, who may otherwise get wrapped up in indoor play and go without fresh air and exercise.

If you have a large space without much light, such as a townhouse, this space might be great for a home theater. The ability to block out light is essential to the enjoyment of a home theater. This type of space would also work well for those who want to use their basement spaces for entertaining. A wet bar, pool table, dartboard or seating area in a low-light area makes for a bar or lounge atmosphere right in your own home. Add a decent sound system and some ashtrays, and you’re in business!
