If you’re building a new home, should you make it smart?
Well, you don’t want it to be dumb! But do you really need to control your home with your phone?
You may not need to, but outfitting your new dwelling with smart-home technology during the building phase is a great investment, and much cheaper than retrofitting later on.
Owners have a lot of decisions to make when building a new home, and it seems the list just grows each year. You wouldn’t have had to consider smart-home technology if you were building a new home 10 or 20 years ago.
What are some of the most popular features in smart-home technology today?
Thermostats — Programmable thermostats have been around for a while. But the new smart thermostats learn your temperature preferences, remember them and then use the knowledge to keep you comfortable and save energy.
Security systems — Today’s security systems are much more sophisticated than what you got from the company that installs plastic warning signs on front lawns. These security systems monitor who comes and goes from your home and at what hour, allowing you to not only thwart burglars, but keep tabs on sneaky teenagers. This technology can also allow you to see who’s ringing your doorbell (in case you don’t want to get up to answer it).
Automated lights and switches — You can use this technology to turn lights, fans and other devices off and on with your phone, or you can program them to do it themselves. Some models also track how much energy each gadget or appliance consumes.
Speakers — Installing the wiring while you’re building your new home is infinitely easier than adding smart speakers later. Of course wireless versions are available, but they’re not as powerful.
But some of the speakers don’t just speak, they listen. When speakers are equipped with voice activation and connected to hubs, homeowners can control devices throughout the house as well as check the weather or even shop online — all with their voice.
Building a new home isn’t just about hammers and nails anymore. It’s about the IoT and IFTTT and lots of other acronyms that will make your home easier to live in and more valuable.
