Need More Space? Raise the Roof on Your Garage.

September 24, 2018

Does it sometimes seem like your house must be shrinking? It could be all the stuff you’re buying, or it could be that you’re trying to fit too many people under one roof.

The answer may be to add more roof (with an addition under it), but if you want to save money, raise the roof instead.

Raising the roof on a home to add a second story is not generally cheaper than building an addition, it just saves space. Raising the roof on your garage, however, is much more affordable.

Uses for a Room Over the Garage

An extra room over the garage can serve so many purposes. If you’re expanding your family, you can use the space as a master suite and turn over the smaller rooms to the kids.

Or, if your kids are hitting their teenage years, they may need a bigger, more private area away from the family.

Another great use for this space is for a college student who’s graduating and coming back home. Just when you get used to being an empty nester, a fledgling or two returns! After they’ve spent time living on their own — and after you got used to a certain amount of quiet and privacy — it’s hard for a college graduate to move back into their old childhood bedroom with their soccer trophies and wall pennants.

Maximizing Your Space

Raising the roof on your garage to make a separate apartment, complete with full bath and kitchen, will cost more than adding just a bedroom. But the investment can be worth it.

If you have other children, they might want to take advantage of a free or cheap space to live while trying to pay down college debt.

For those who have parents or in-laws who decide to downsize and sell their home, a room over the garage might be the perfect spot for them, especially if they need care or assistance. Having ailing relatives far away can be stressful.

If you get to a point where no family members need your room over the garage, rent it out. An arrangement like this can bring in some much-appreciated extra income each month.

Or keep it for yourself. Use it as an office, crafting room, gym, home theater or just an oasis to get away from it all.
