Important Walk-In Shower Considerations

November 13, 2018

For those who don’t use an existing tub often, or even for anyone looking for a stylish upgrade in their bathroom, the walk-in shower is a trendy option that’s growing in popularity. Offering both pleasing aesthetics and practical functional features, the walk-in shower is a great option for anyone looking at a bathroom remodel.

At Falk Construction Inc., we can help with this and all other bathroom remodeling areas. If you’ve decided a walk-in shower is the right choice for you, there are several big choices now in front of you – let’s look at several of the areas you should be considering and help guide you toward the perfect walk-in shower for your new bathroom.

Shape and Space

For starters, you have to consider how your walk-in shower will affect the entire bathroom when it comes to space and layout. There are a number of different shapes available for customized walk-in showers, from basic squares or rectangles to more creative choices like angled designs or curved quarter-circles in the corner.

Keep in mind as you make your choice here that it will affect the rest of the bathroom. If you have a swinging shower door, for instance, be sure to plan appropriately for areas it might block while it’s open.

Lighting Considerations

From an aesthetic standpoint, few things are more important to the success of your bathroom remodel than the lighting above and around the shower area. What’s the point of a wonderful new design in the bathroom if improper light makes it difficult to see? Utilize both natural and man-made light where appropriate to really show off your new design.

Of course, lighting has functional importance as well. The bathroom quickly becomes unsafe if those using it can’t see well enough, especially around the shower area where things could be wet and slippery. Particularly if anyone using the bathroom regularly has less than perfect vision, proper lighting should be prioritized for this reason as well.

If there’s space available, you can design your walk-in shower with seating that makes it easier for use. This is a common choice for homes with seniors or others with mobility issues, where seats might make showering far simpler and more beneficial.

There are numerous options available for your showerhead in a walk-in shower, and don’t gloss over this area. The fixed showerhead is the most commonly chosen option, but you can get very creative here with things like multiple showerheads, a ceiling mount of some kind, or detachable sprayer options.

Finally, walk-in showers offer the option of storage niches, which are perfect for opening up the bathroom even further. They replace you needing to hang racks or other storage devices from the showerhead, instead allowing for free and open space as you bathe.
