Tips for Scheduling Your Kitchen Remodel

January 20, 2019

When it comes to a kitchen remodel, there are two factors that stand above the rest in terms of importance, and which are related: Time and money. For major remodeling efforts, the time it takes to conceptualize, design and fully execute the project can be a hugely significant factor.

At Falk Construction Inc., we can help you efficiently budget both your time and money as part of our kitchen remodel services. Here are some simple basics on scheduling your entire remodel from start to finish, plus some important timelines to consider.

Pre-Planning

First and foremost comes planning, which includes several possible areas and a great variety of detail. The first step here is deciding exactly what you want to remodel – some homeowners only make small changes to cabinets or accessories, while others tear down virtually the entire kitchen and start from scratch.

Once you’ve chosen your broad themes, you can look at your budget and various styles you’re interested in. Spend some time researching contractors and any documentation you’ll need, whether it’s for permits or anything else. Your planning timeline may take just a few days for simpler projects, but may take weeks or even months for some of the more complex ones. This will also depend in large part on how much of the planning you include your contractor in.

Materials

Once you’re clear on everything that’s being done for your remodel, it’s time tog et your hands on the materials needed. If this is your first time remodeling part of a home, we have one word of advice for you here: Patience.

This isn’t like ordering from Amazon, where with the right membership you can get everything within two days. No, some items in the general contractor world come with delays or stock issues, particularly if you’re ordering custom-made materials. You may also have to file for permits, something we can help with, but also something that takes time. Getting materials could take up to a month or two.

Demolition and Construction

Depending on the nature of your project, your demolition period may take anywhere from a single afternoon to several weeks – the latter if you’re knocking down walls or other similar large areas. Our contractors can lay out this period for you, particularly if it’s one where you’ll be living elsewhere temporarily.

From here, we can get to work on the actual new construction itself. We’ll first look to wiring, plumbing, plus all ducts or vents that were impacted by the remodel. Then we’ll move to flooring, drywall and other major areas, which can take between a few days and a couple weeks depending on whether any issues are discovered.

Installation and Finishing

Finally, it’s time to start installing various fixtures and features into the new kitchen. Cabinets and countertops are the most time-consuming here, and they can take a couple weeks to install if you’re dealing with custom materials. For appliances, lights, tile and other areas, a few days apiece will usually get the job done.
