Important Stages of New Home Construction, Part 1

February 26, 2019

For those who have never been involved in it before, the process of new home construction can be both exciting and intimidating. Having this level of control over the design and other elements of your home is highly enjoyable for many buyers, but there’s also a lot to think about here and some may wonder where to even begin.

At Falk Construction Inc., we’re here to help with this. We’ve built new homes all across Ogden and surrounding Utah areas, helping our clients from start to finish with everything from basic planning to final installation. This two-part blog will simplify things for you by laying out the basic steps and areas you’ll cover with your home builder.

Design Basics

The first stage here is basic design, which is both enjoyable and a bit stressful as you begin to narrow down your options and pick the best ones. We’ll work with you directly on several architectural themes, from the basic layout of the home to more particular space and design areas. When we’re finished with this stage, you’ll have a detailed design plan to move forward with.

Grading, Site Prep and Foundation

From here, it’s time to get the property area ready for the house that’s going to be built on it. In some cases, the property may contain a specific slope or other grading issues that need to be corrected – this will be done before any other site prep to ensure the project is done on level ground.

Next up is one of the more time-consuming areas of the project: Installing foundation. Utah has a high standard for foundation quality and installation, and we have our own set of standards that must be met as well. The foundation is the baseline for the entire construction of your home, and should not be glossed over or rushed.

House Framing

You may think this is another lengthy step, but you’d actually probably be a bit surprised at how quick it goes in most cases. The wooden frame is mostly erected on the ground, then raised in a few large pieces as the home begins to take its main shape.

Windows and Doors

A big part of the reason why you hire our pros is because of our ability to coordinate various outside contractors. This may include areas like the windows and doors – we have excellent relationships with local vendors, plus can get affordable deals on materials for your home.

Roofing, Siding and Materials

This is a stage where we’ll work with you to determine the right materials, the most important factor here. If possible, we’ll try to outline this choice during the initial design phase.
